Glen Davis Shale Oil Works: A Pioneering Endeavor

  • The Glen Davis Shale Oil Works was an ambitious shale oil extraction plant that aimed to produce petrol from shale. It played a pivotal role during World War II, as shale oil was considered a strategic resource.
  • The project was initiated for national defense purposes, but its roots trace back to the 1934 report of the Newnes Investigation Committee. This committee explored ways to reduce unemployment among miners in the region.
  • In 1936, a public notice in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette invited offers for developing the oil industry in the Glen Davis area.
  • National Oil Proprietary Limited, backed by capital from George Francis Davis (of Davis Gelatine), spearheaded the establishment of the new oil shale operation. Financial support came from both the Commonwealth of Australia and the New South Wales governments.
